You’ve submitted your applications, made your decision, and paid your seat deposit. Congratulations — you’re officially on your way to law school. Now comes the question every incoming 1L asks themselves: What should I be doing this summer to prepare?
Here’s my honest answer: not much.
The summer before 1L is your last real break before the grind of law school. Once classes start, your days will be packed with case reading, outlines, and preparing for exams. That’s why I’m a big believer in actually enjoying your summer. Travel, spend time with family and friends, play ball, go to the beach, pick up a hobby — whatever fills you up.
Still, there are a few light things you can do to give yourself peace of mind and make your first week a little smoother. Think of it as investing 5% of your energy in prep and 95% in living your life.
1. Read a Few Cases — Just to Get a Feel
Don’t buy a mountain of casebooks or try to “get ahead.” That’s a waste of time — professors will teach the material their way anyway. But reading a handful of cases over the summer can help you feel less intimidated.
Focus on spotting the basics: facts, issue, rule, and conclusion. That’s it. You’ll practice the deeper analysis once you’re in class.
2. Learn What a Case Brief Is
Briefing cases is one of those law school rituals every 1L stresses about. You don’t need to master it before school starts. But looking at a sample case brief or two will demystify the process. Try writing one yourself — keep it simple, bullet points are fine. Then stop. You’ll refine the skill once classes begin.
3. Handle Life Logistics Early
Want to really give yourself an advantage? Clear space in your life so you can focus once law school starts. That means:
- Finalizing housing and moving in early if possible.
- Setting up your budget and financial aid so there are no surprises.
- Buying your laptop, backpack, and whatever basics you’ll need.
That way, you’re not juggling paperwork and moving boxes during your first week of classes.
4. Take Care of Yourself
Law school will test your stamina more than your intelligence. Use this summer to:
- Get into a simple workout routine.
- Prioritize good sleep.
- Spend intentional time with people who matter to you.
Most importantly — make memories. You won’t get this kind of free time again for a while, so use it well.
Final Thoughts
The summer before 1L is not about memorizing the law. It’s about arriving rested, excited, and ready to go. Read a case or two if it calms your nerves. Skim a sample outline. But beyond that? Close the laptop, put your feet up, and enjoy yourself.
Because once law school begins, you’ll be grateful you made the most of this season.
